What the Official WhatsApp Business API actually is
And why it matters that WhatEdge runs on it. If you are new to this, read this page before you buy anything from anyone — including us.
The WhatsApp Business app is built for one person answering a phone. The API is what a business uses when it needs several people on one number, bulk messaging that is permitted rather than tolerated, automation, and integration with its own systems. There is no app to download — the API is used through a platform like WhatEdge.
| Who it is for | What it cannot do | |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp Messenger | Personal use | No business tools, one device at a time |
| WhatsApp Business app | A shop owner, one person answering | No team access, no real automation, no bulk sending — and easily blocked for looking like spam |
| WhatsApp Business API | Businesses that need scale | Nothing to download — it requires a platform like WhatEdge to use it |
What the API gives you
- A verified business identity, with the green tick available on eligible accounts
- Your whole team on one number, through a shared inbox
- Bulk messaging that is permitted by Meta rather than quietly tolerated
- Automation, chatbots and integration with your own systems
- Delivery and read reporting on every message you send
Why unofficial panels are a trap
There are cheap tools that automate the ordinary WhatsApp app rather than using the API. They are violating Meta’s terms, and they work until they do not.
The failure mode is not a warning or a fine. It is your business number being banned permanently, with your chat history and every customer conversation on it gone. There is no appeal process worth counting on, and the number you have printed on your signage, your invoices and your hoardings stops working.
WhatEdge only operates on the official API. It costs more than a grey-market panel, and that difference is the whole point.
What you need to get started
- A registered business, with GST or equivalent proof
- A phone number that is not currently active on WhatsApp — or an existing one we help migrate
- A Facebook Business Manager account (we create this if you do not have one)
- A display name that meets Meta’s guidelines
You supply the documents. We handle the submission, the verification and the follow-ups with Meta. There is no charge for any of it — it is included in your plan.
Migrating a number you already use
Most businesses want to keep the number their customers already have. That is usually possible, with one consequence worth knowing before you agree to it: once a number is on the API, it no longer works in the WhatsApp app on a phone. That is a Meta rule rather than ours.
If somebody in your business needs to keep answering on their handset, the cleaner answer is often to register a new number for the API and redirect to it over time.
The green tick
The green tick — Meta’s official business verification badge — is granted on the basis of brand notability. It is not for sale, and it is not something any platform can promise you.
What we can do is prepare and submit the application properly, with the supporting material that gives it the best chance. Anyone who guarantees you a green tick is not being straight with you.
Templates and the 24-hour window
If the customer messages you first, you can reply freely for 24 hours. If you want to message them first, you need a template that Meta has approved in advance. This is what stops WhatsApp filling up with unsolicited marketing, and it is the rule most businesses find surprising.
WhatEdge writes your templates, picks the right category, submits them and tracks approval — usually cleared within a few hours.
How pricing works on the API
Two separate things:
- The platform fee you pay WhatEdge for the software — fixed, with no setup charge and no cap on how much you send.
- Messaging, billed per 24-hour conversation rather than per message, at rates that vary by category: marketing, utility, authentication or service.
You buy the messaging from WhatEdge and top it up in your dashboard, so there is no separate Meta billing account to open. See the pricing page for how that works in practice.
Quality rating: the thing to actually protect
Meta scores every business number on how recipients react to it. Blocks and reports pull the score down, and a number with a poor rating gets its daily reach restricted, then suspended.
The fastest way to lose a number is to buy a list and message it. The safest way to keep one is to message people who agreed to hear from you, and to segment rather than blast. We monitor your rating and will tell you before a campaign damages it — even when that is not what you want to hear.
Questions about the API
The WhatsApp Business app is built for one person answering a phone. The API is what a business uses when it needs several people on one number, bulk messaging that is permitted rather than tolerated, automation, and integration with its own systems. There is no app to download — the API is used through a platform like WhatEdge. If more than one person answers your customers, or you want messages to send themselves, you need the API.
Usually, yes. The number has to be migrated to the API, and once it is, it will no longer work in the WhatsApp app on a phone — that is a Meta rule, not ours. We handle the migration. If you would rather keep your existing handset number as it is, we can register a new number instead.
The green tick is granted by Meta on the basis of brand notability, and it is not something anyone can buy or promise. We prepare and submit the application properly, which is the part that is in our control. Anyone who guarantees you a green tick is not being straight with you.
Yes — on the official API, using approved templates, to people who have agreed to hear from you. What gets numbers banned is unofficial panels that automate the regular WhatsApp app, and messaging bought lists. We only operate on the official API, and we will tell you if a campaign looks likely to damage your quality rating.
Any message your business sends first — before the customer has written to you — has to use a template that Meta has approved. It stops WhatsApp filling up with unsolicited marketing. WhatEdge handles the writing, category selection, submission and approval tracking, and keeps every approved template ready to reuse. Approval usually takes a few hours.
Your quality rating drops, and if it keeps dropping Meta restricts your number. This is the single most important thing to protect. We monitor your rating, warn you when a campaign is heading the wrong way, and honour opt-outs automatically so people who have asked to stop hearing from you are excluded from every future campaign.
